Nano in Cancer: Linking Chemistry, Biology, and Clinical Applications In Vivo

Event Details:

Start date : January 12, 2011
End date : January 15, 2011
Location : InterContinental Miami Hotel, Miami, Florida
Organized by : American Association for Cancer Research

Event Description:

Nanoscopic materials have shown significant promise as diagnostic and therapeutic
agents in the fight against cancer. Nanoparticles can serve as vehicles for
drug delivery because of their ability to circulate for prolonged times, target
a particular organ or tissue, serve as carriers of DNA in gene therapy, or deliver
proteins, peptides, drugs and other payloads in the fight against cancer. Nanoparticles
can alter and potentially improve the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties
of various types of drugs. Nanoparticles also provide a strategy to visualize
tumor cells and molecules that otherwise cannot be detected through conventional
imaging. There are many aspects of nanoparticle formulation, characterization,
and their effect on delivery of drugs and therapeutics that remain to be explored.

This AACR Special Conference will be a gathering of leaders and newcomers in
this field who will provide state-of-the-art information and will speculate
on future directions, with topics including the latest discoveries in nanoparticle
chemistry and formulation, delivery barriers, biomarkers, molecular imaging,
therapeutic applications, clinical translation, and safety, each as related
to cancer diagnostics and therapy. Sessions will include prominent, expert speakers
who are leaders in these areas. There will be a keynote address from Dr. Roger
Y. Tsien, who shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of
Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and seminal work to design and create fluorescent
molecules that enter cells and light up their inner workings. The program will
feature eight (8) interrelated plenary sessions, two (2) poster sessions, as
well as a proffered talk session for young investigators. This AACR conference,
the first of its type focusing on nanomedicine in cancer, will appeal to basic
scientists, translational and clinical investigators, and trainees. Please join
us in Miami for this exciting program.
