Actual development of the technology is typically done at the research level by PhD’s and graduate students. Most of the people in the industry that do development of nanoparticles and nanodevices are highly educated (graduate degree and above) plus years of experience.

But without it, what do you think the limits are to our ability to control the structure, condition and even the physical form of our bodies?

To me the question is "Is shapeshifting possible?" Now one of Clarke’s Laws was "When a distinguished scientist says something is possible he is usually right: when a distinguished scientist says something is impossible, he is usually wrong", but more and more as I get older I find myself believing we are as constrained by our understanding of concepts as we are by anything else. Vernon Vinge’s concept of the Singularity, where infinite progress becomes not just possible but economically feasible, is not totally fantastic, but mainly because it would best make sense as a point in the understanding of education.

Fractal Biology has given new life to some old, somewhat alchemical, concepts of what the relationships between life forms are. In fact, this was one of the things expressed in "As above, so below." This actually suggests that the differences between, say humans and wolves, are MORE profound than we realize, and something both slower and more permanent than "shape-shifting" would be needed.

Further, recent psychological studies which point to the difficulty of reaching truly "objective" conclusions would appear to support (again with a twist) the old esoteric teaching that personality and human consciousness itself are inventions as artificial (and profound) as the Wheel or the use of fire for cooking. Rudolf Steiner and George Gurdjieff are two teachers who explained this. This raises the question as to whether we could conceptualize (write specs for) such a transformation.

Nanotechnology does not to me seem important to the question of whether there are limits to our ability to control the structure, condition and physical form of our bodies. With understanding, we might find other methodologies, if it is worth doing.

It is well known that small pollutant particles present serious health dangers. They come from natural sources e.g. fire and volcanoes, and from man made sources e.g. cars, trucks, planes. Photocopy toner is dangerous to inhale.

Any manufactured nonoparticles need to be controlled for use in the environment for which they were intended. a) If they reproduce – in the future – then that must be tightly controlled!

New, fragile designs may be needed for medical remediation. Subtleties fo scale have surfaced showing that the way natural cells work have a lot to teach us. Viscosity is a major factor at nanoscales.

Nanoparticles may need to communicate with each other and with a central control supervisor…

I currently have that VA benefit where the VA pays for all your college but it must be in California. I was wondering, what would probably be a good major if nanotechnology was my field of choice and what would probably be a good choice of UC to go to.

Engineering is one way to go, it depends on what you want to do with nanotechnology, it consists of engineering, electronics, chemistry, physics, the applications are becoming very wide spread. Pick one. lol

They simply didn’t exist yet and the technology wasn’t yet developed. As computers became more advanced, jobs opened up and different types of training and certifications were developed, not just research jobs. Now, you can get an MSCE license after passing an exam. Will such things be possible in the future for nanotechnology once it develops more and becomes more practical? Will you be able to get some kind of certification for nanotech work? And without having to go through all the physics, mathematics, etc type classes that you do today to get a job in just researching nanotech?

I was with you, and was about to assure that "Yes, such a Certificate is inevitable…" until you said "without having to go through all the physics, mathematics, etc type classes that you do today to get a job in just researching nanotech…"!

That’s a bit like asking if you would be able to play Beethoven’s Sonata Op.13 "Pathetique" on the piano, without having to go through all those pesky piano lessons, and learning about music and stuff.
